Botox Q&A

Young, beautiful African American woman receiving Botox treatment.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable wrinkle-reducing medication used to address dynamic wrinkles or those caused by repetitive expression. Whenever you smile, frown, or squint, lines become etched into your skin.

Botox is a derivative of a neurotoxin that temporarily halts muscle activity in the areas responsible for these wrinkles, so your face softens and wrinkles ease.

Where can Botox be used?

The FDA approves Botox for cosmetic use:

  • Around the eyes (the crow’s feet)
  • Between the eyebrows (worry lines or the 11s)
  • Along the forehead (horizontal lines)

Dr. Jefferson sometimes uses another injectable wrinkle-reducer, Xeomin® for the frown lines between the brows or Dysport® for forehead wrinkles and frown lines.

How soon will I notice the effects of Botox treatment?

You’ll begin to notice changes in the look of your wrinkles after 24-48 hours. Optimal results can be seen in about seven days. If you have questions about your treatment or the effects, be sure to contact the office right away.

How long do the effects of Botox last?

Botox and other wrinkle-reducing treatments like Dysport and Xeomin provide temporary results that last 3-4 months. Exactly how long you see a benefit depends on your personal metabolism and the extent of wrinkling.

To maintain the effects of your Botox injections, return to the office for repeat treatments on a regular schedule.

What happens at a Botox injection appointment?

Your entire treatment session lasts just 15-20 minutes. After Dr. Jefferson cleanses your face and identifies the right muscles for injection, she uses a very fine needle to apply the Botox.

You feel a slight pinch during each needle prick, but most people find the process quite tolerable. If you’re concerned about the sensations, talk to Dr. Jefferson about using a topical numbing cream or ice prior to treatment.

Do I need to schedule downtime following Botox treatment?

Botox, as well as injections of Dysport and Xeomin, are known as lunchtime treatments. You can go right back to work or proceed with other daily activities following your session. Even exercise is okay following Botox injections.

Some people experience slight bruising, swelling, or pinpoint redness at the site of the injections, but these effects fade quickly.

If you’re ready to experience the effects of Botox for yourself, call Zen Aesthetics to set up an appointment or use the online tool to request an appointment.
