Thread Lift Q & A

What is a PDO thread lift and how does it work?

One of the most innovative cosmetic techniques, a PDO thread lift is the perfect “lunchtime facelift” for anyone looking for a non-surgical option to address aging skin. Each procedure can last around 30-60 minutes but the results can last anywhere from 1-2 years or more in some cases. Including preparation and the time following treatment, you can expect the entire appointment to last a maximum of 2 hours.

During the treatment absorbable polydioxanone (PDO) threads are strategically placed to trigger the body’s production of collagen and elastin. The threads remain in place for around 6 to 9 months, after which time they are absorbed into the body, leaving new collagen in their place.

This material has excellent biocompatibility (e.g. it’s non-allergic and non-antigenic) and is also completely biodegradable and doesn’t create scar tissue. Since the body completely absorbs the PDO material, possible complications are significantly reduced.

Are all PDO threads the same?

Just like fillers, toxins and all things aesthetics, all PDO threads are definitely not the same. At Zen Aesthetics, we use various types of threads all from award-winning, MINT™ PDO.

Barbed threads are most commonly used to lift sagging tissue around the jaw and neck in order to improve the patient’s profile. These types of threads are usually best suited for our more mature patients in combination with other treatments.

Meanwhile, smooth threads can be used for plumping and adding volume to deficient areas, such as the cheeks, as well as lifting. As a general rule, smooth threads are suitable for younger patients who are not yet sagging and want to maintain their skin quality. We can also use smooth threads to help tighten the skin in some areas or to prepare the skin to receive barbed threads in mature patients.

During your initial consultation, our providers will discuss what options are best in order to help you achieve your desired look.

Areas That Can Be Treated

The areas that people mostly choose for a thread lift include:

  • Eyebrows
  • Nasolabial fold and smile lines (mid-face)
  • Nasal bridge
  • Jowls and jawline (lower face)
  • Marionette lines
  • Chin and neck

After The Treatment

Please do not touch treated areas for 4 hours after the treatment.
Please avoid sleeping on treated areas until redness or swelling is gone.
Please do not plan any facial treatments after 3-4 weeks after treatment.

Avoid strenuous exercise and warming of your face 7-10 days.

Laser treatments might break new collagen, which has been stimulated after the PDO threads treatment, so please do not plan any laser treatments to these treated areas for the next 4 weeks.

There is potential for swelling, redness and bruising but this will subside after a few days. However, you will be able to resume normal everyday activities in just a couple of days following the treatment.
