Chemical Peels Q&A

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are a skin treatment that deeply exfoliates your skin. These treatments work by using a chemical solution to cause dead skin cells to disintegrate from the surface. This leaves you with a bright, refreshed complexion. Your skin can better absorb nutrients from professional skin care products after a chemical peel.

Dr. Jefferson will first carefully examine your skin during an initial consultation and discuss your health history, prior skin care treatments, and goals before recommending a VI Peel.

She may recommend getting a series of three treatments, spaced 2-3 weeks apart for healing, and then continuing your improvements with maintenance peels every 1-3 months, depending on your desired results.

What will my skin look like after a chemical peel?

A chemical can restore your skin’s appearance and health in a number of different ways, depending on the features you choose to target. In general, VI peels allow you to enjoy smooth, rejuvenated skin with a more even and balanced tone. They achieve this by stimulating cell regeneration or the growth of new, healthy skin cells.

During your consultation, you can identify the specific features you want to minimize with your chemical peel. You can target:

  • Large pores
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Acne
  • Sunspots
  • Hyperpigmentation

The products you use after your peel can offer additional benefits, including hydration and brightening.

What are the ingredients in a chemical peel?

The VI Peel contains a mixture of several different acids to safely treat your skin regardless of its tone, sensitivity, or texture. The VI Peel contains:

Retinoic acid

Retinoic acid is a retinoid, meaning it helps slow your skin’s breakdown of collagen to minimize wrinkles, lines, and dark spots.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)

A common ingredient in many chemical peels, TCA can treat features like acne scars and discoloration.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid penetrates your skin deeply and treats oily and acne-prone skin. It also works as an exfoliant.

Phenol

Phenol is a skin lightener, which helps it work against hyperpigmentation and dark spots on your skin.

Vitamin C

The vitamin C in your VI Peel helps protect your skin cells against damage from harmful UV sun rays.
